Planet Bike Tapped for GREENy Award on Apr 21, 2009
Madison, WI. -April 21, 2009 - Planet Bike is proud to announce that it is the recipient of the 2009 Bicycle Retailer and Industry News' GREENy award.
Bicycle Retailer and Industry News, the bicycle industry''s principal trade journal, recognized Planet Bike for its longtime commitment to practicing business with environmental awareness and sensitivity. The presentation was made on April 17th during the annual Bicycle Leadership Conference, held in Monterey, CA.
In its fourteen year history, Planet Bike has enacted a long list of environmental initiatives including: conducting routine energy audits, engineering products with longevity and repair-ability in mind, working to use 100% recycled paper and soy-based inks on all packaging, and employing a 10 kilowatt solar power system atop company headquarters. The photo voltaic power array has helped reduce Planet Bike''s carbon emissions by 15 tons annually.
"The unassuming bicycle holds huge potential for people to reduce their environmental impacts and that is why our mission of donating 25% of company profits is, at its core, an environmental mission," said Planet Bike president Jeff Frehner. "We are thrilled to be honored by Bicycle Retailer and proud that we are helping to usher in a new era in business where environmental commitments become the customary way of doing business."
Planet Bike designs high quality bicycle accessories that make it easier and safer for people to ride their bikes. Since its inception in 1996, Planet Bike has believed that the bicycle can improve our environment and our quality of life. Therefore, each year it has donated at least 25% of profits to causes that promote and facilitate the use of bicycles. Since its founding, Planet Bike has donated more than $660,000 to the grassroots advocacy movement with a goal of reaching the $1 million mark by the end of 2009.
